Abbe - Institute for Charitable Foundations
Ernst Abbe - one of the most famous Jena personalities - created the Carl Zeiss Foundation, a unique form of social entrepreneurship also dedicated to scholarship. The Ernst Abbe Foundation, which is the descendent of the Carl Zeiss Foundation, adheres to this tradition. It promotes scholarly endeavor more than almost any other foundation in Thuringia and is steadfastly devoted to supporting a close nexus among academic achievement, technical transformation, and social-political responsibility.
The Abbe Institute for Charitable Foundations at the Friedrich Schiller University, which was founded on January 17, 2005 as a division of the Ernst Abbe Foundation, follows this leitmotif.
The Abbe Institute fulfills its mission by providing interdisciplinary support for projects between the law and economics faculties and by examining and developing legal and economic aspects of foundational work.
Furthermore, the Abbe Institute represents a first step and thus cornerstone for a center of competence in the area of the law of charitable foundations. Of particular interest are foundations within the area of the new German states, where - according to the most recent statistics collected by the Federal Association of German Foundations - the fewest new foundations are established.
The Managing Director of the Abbe Institute for Charitable Foundations is Prof. Dr. Olaf Werner.

Institute for the Law of the Energy Industry - Center of Competence for Technology, Economics, Law -

The Institute for the Law of the Energy Industry in Jena - Center of Competence for Technology, Economics, Law, which was founded on May 8, 2007, is an independent, non-profit academic facility devoted to the research and teaching of the law of the energy industry in light of economic, technological and political parameters. As the only institute of its kind in the new German states, it unites the competence of scholars of law, economics, geology, and engineering from three universities (Friedrich Schiller University Jena / Technical University Ilmenau / Bauhaus University Weimar).
Its goal is to develop solutions on an interdisciplinary basis to questions posed by the energy industry and when appropriate make a contribution to public discussion. The source of the concept of the Institute for the Law of the Energy Industry was a foundational initiative sparked by engaged personalities of economics, scholarship, and politics, which ultimately led to the foundation of the Association for the Promotion of the Institute for the Law of the Energy Industry Jena on December 14, 2006.

The Institute was established to promote the research and teaching of all areas of law affecting the professional activities of notaries. For this purpose, academic conferences are held and research projects sponsored on issues specific to the notary profession. Moreover, notaries participate in law school courses to explain problems to the students relating to the notary profession.

The Institute of Professional Ethics for Notaries is directed by Professor Dr. Walter Bayer.
